What $499 Actually Buys: Inside a Hand-Coded Website Build

Through August 2, founding Rochester clients get our $750 Starter build for $499. Here's exactly what's in it — no padding, no upsell script.

Cheap websites have a reputation problem, and honestly, most of it is earned. A "$500 website" usually means a reseller loading a template into a page builder, swapping your logo in, and moving on. So when we say founding Rochester clients get our Starter build for $499 through August 2, the fair question is: what does that actually include? Here's the full inventory — the same one we put in the contract.

First, why the price is low right now

No mystery: ROC Web Tech is a Rochester studio building its local portfolio. Through August 2, 2026, the first five businesses per month get founding-client pricing — Starter at $499 instead of $750, Growth at $899 instead of $1,250, Authority at $1,899 instead of $2,500. Same build process, same performance guarantee. In exchange, we get local case studies and (if you're happy) a review. Your year-two retainer also locks at the founding rate. After August 2, regular pricing applies. That's the whole trade.

What "hand-coded" means (and why you should care)

Every site we ship is written in Next.js — the same framework used by Nike, OpenAI, and Notion — and deployed as pre-built static files on a global CDN. There is no page builder, no theme, and no plugin stack.

That's not developer vanity. It's the difference you can measure:

  • Speed. In our July audits of Rochester small-business sites, mobile load times ran from 5 seconds to 23 seconds. Pre-rendered static pages consistently load in about 1 second on a phone, because the server isn't assembling the page while your customer waits.
  • Security. No WordPress plugins means no plugin vulnerabilities to patch, ever.
  • No platform rent. You're not locked into a builder's monthly fee to keep your own site alive.

We put a number on it: every build ships with a 90+ Google PageSpeed score guarantee. You can check it yourself at PageSpeed Insights the day it goes live.

The Starter inventory, line by line

For $499 (founding) you get:

  • 1–5 custom-designed pages — home, services, about, contact, plus one more. Designed for your business, not adapted from a theme 40,000 other sites use.
  • Copywriting included. We write the pages with you, aimed at what Rochester customers actually search for.
  • LocalBusiness structured data — the JSON-LD markup that tells Google your name, address, phone, hours, and service area in its own language. Most local sites we audit are missing it entirely.
  • A working contact form with spam protection, delivered to your email.
  • Mobile-first build — designed on a phone screen first, because that's where most of your visitors are.
  • SSL, sitemap, Google Search Console setup — the technical checklist that makes your site indexable from day one.
  • First 3 months of hosting free, then $20/month — SSL, deploys, and minor monthly updates included.
  • 1 month of ongoing SEO included — we don't hand you the keys and vanish.

What it doesn't buy (read this part too)

Honesty is the sales pitch, so: Starter is not the right fit for everyone.

  • If you need 10+ pages or want to edit content yourself through a CMS, that's Growth ($899 founding).
  • If you're in a competitive trade — roofing, HVAC, legal — and want to rank across every town you serve, that's Authority ($1,899 founding) with its service-by-city page matrix.
  • E-commerce, booking systems, and member portals are custom quotes. We'll tell you on the call if your project doesn't fit, and we've pointed people to cheaper DIY options when that was the honest answer.

If you're not sure which tier fits, the pricing page breaks all three down side by side.

What the first two weeks look like

  • Days 1–2: A 30-minute discovery call. We collect your services, photos, service area, and what makes you different.
  • Days 3–7: We design and build. You get a private preview link, not a mockup PDF.
  • Days 8–10: One structured revision round. Real changes, not "make the logo bigger" ping-pong.
  • Days 10–14: Launch on your domain, with Search Console verified and your Google Business Profile linked to the new site.

Two weeks, start to finish, for most Starter builds.

The math that matters

A $499 site that brings in two customers has probably paid for itself, depending on your average job value. But the more useful comparison is with what you have now: if your current site takes 8+ seconds to load on a phone — and half the Rochester sites we audited this month did — a meaningful share of your visitors are gone before they ever see your phone number. You're already paying for a slow site in missed calls. This is just the cheaper way to stop.

The founding window closes August 2, 2026, and it's capped at five businesses. If you want one of the spots, get a free audit of your current site first — it's a real technical report, and it'll tell you honestly whether you even need us.
